Simply getting a horse to the races is a costly endeavour these days, with full costs constantly on the rise. Sticking to local tracks seems like a reasonable thing to do with that in mind but Alice Haynes is doing the opposite on Monday. The Newmarket based trainer is sending two horses on the 740-mile round trip to Ayr, which has to be noteworthy.
Jockey Kieran O’Neill has a very successful record when partnering with Haynes up at Ayr and he’s set to ride both horses. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Rosemary’s Rose was far from disgraced when fourth on debut at Bath in September, especially as she was hampered just after the start. This daughter of Belardo is entitled to improve for the run and should be in the mix once again if doing so.
Ayr has been a happy hunting ground for Haynes in recent season and she’s operating at a strike-rate of 31 per cent there in the last five seasons. That goes up to 50 per cent when including placed horses, so it’s unlikely that she’s sending them all the way up there just for a day out.
Wateen‘s pedigree is a mix of speed and stamina and she’s closely related to a 1m4f winner but her grand dam won a 5f Group 3 as a juvenile. This certainly looks like a good opportunity and provided she’s forward enough for this outing, a big run can’t be ruled out.
One of Haynes’ three newcomers that made their debuts at Ayr was also a winner, which bodes well for Wateen here. Only two of her four rivals have previous experience and neither made a very good impression. The winner is therefore likely to be one of the debutants and Haynes’ filly has every chance.
