There’s €100,000 on offer for the Listed QuinnBet Novice Handicap Chase at Punchestown on Friday and recent history suggests you don’t want to take on Willie Mullins. He has won five of the last six renewals of the race and seven of the last 10.

This horse has finished third in all three starts over fences so far and the switch to handicaps could facilitate a significant amount of improvement. There was plenty to like about his third behind Lecky Watson on seasonal debut at Naas and the best is undoubtedly yet to come.
Mullins’ mare was particularly smart as a juvenile hurdler, finishing third behind Lossiemouth in the Triumph Hurdle, before going on to win a Grade 1 at Aintree. She won a beginners chase at Fairyhouse in February and wasn’t disgraced when third in handicap company most recently. Clearly she has a bit to find but the six-year-old remains lightly raced in this sphere.
It’s tricky to make a case for Sir Argus, as he unseated his rider last time out and hadn’t shown loads in two chase starts before that. He is however potentially well handicapped on his hurdles form but the son of Soldier Of Fortune is probably worth taking on here.
Western Diego’s last run over this sort of trip resulted in a heavy defeat at Gowran back in January and he could therefore struggle. Very disappointing in a Listed contest at Ayr last month, a 4lb rise will help but he’s probably not the one to side with on this occasion.
Danny Mullins rides this seven-year-old and his best effort over fences to date came at Leopardstown in March. Second by five-and-a-half lengths that day, he’s likely to benefit from the switch to handicaps and is entitled to run well off a mark of 125.
