Willie Mullins has had a great week already at Punchestown which is no surprise but it might not have been with the horses you would expect. Irancy (18/1), Champ Kiely (22/1) and Wonderful Everyday (16/1) are three outsiders on the board for team Closutton so far this week, while Fact To File (11/10), Kopek Des Bordes (30/100), Leader Des Bordes (2/1) and Ballyburn (11/8) are some of the shorties to flop for the stable. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of Willie’s outsiders who can figure on Thursday.
C’Est Ta Chance disappointed on handicap debut at Ayr when last seen but the six-year-old could be worth another chance here. Beaten a short head by William Munny on debut in a Navan bumper, he won a 2m4f maiden hurdle at Clonmel easily in December but his form petered out a bit after that. It’s still early days for this lightly raced handicapper and a mark of 131 could prove to be lenient.
Karamoja will be ridden by Paul Townend and looks too big a price. The Clonmel maiden hurdle winner over 2m3f finished seventh in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, before running a belter when third in a Grade 1 behind stablemate Aurora Vega at Fairyhouse last time. This is a big drop in class.
Winter Fog is one of these horses who never seems to get seriously involved in a good race but at the same time never runs a bad race at the top level either. After a brilliant third in the Champion Hurdle when last seen, he steps back up to a staying trip and he might surprise at a big price.
